MA: How long have you been with Martin Aitken?
NS: I joined the business back in February 2013.
MA: What made you want to join the business?
NS: After I had left university, I was introduced to Martin Aitken via a Commonwealth Apprenticeship. They suggested that Martin Aitken would be a good fit for me.
MA: What career path did you follow to get to your current role?
NS: I went down the university route, studying Accountancy at Glasgow Caledonian University, where I received a 2/1 BA Hons degree.
MA: What does a typical day look like?
NS: I am currently working as a Manager in the Audit & Accounts team, so every day is usually varied. Working with SMEs, limited companies and sole traders, I assist with accounts preparation, audits and quarterly VAT returns.
I’m also involved in preparing monthly management accounts, VAT returns and tax returns (personal and corporation) and have particular expertise in the preparation of monthly/quarterly management accounts, book-keeping and Sage.
MA: What’s the best part of your job?
NS: The best part of the job is that it is so varied that no two days are the same. You get hands-on with clients and are able to provide guidance and help to clients in so many ways.
MA: What’s been your biggest success so far?
NS: I achieved my CA qualification in 2016 with the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland (ICAS).
MA: Where do you see yourself / Martin Aitken in five years’ time?
NS: I want to continue on a growth trajectory in Accountancy. How this develops, it’s hard to say at this point in time!
Overall, I want to make sure no matter what position I’m in, I’m constantly seeking growth opportunities in and outside my role to continue to develop my skills and knowledge.
MA: When you’re not at your desk, what do you like to do in your spare time?
NS: In my spare time, I like going out for walks, watching movies and spending quality time with my niece.
The people at MACO are approachable, friendly and keen to help.
I feel this is one of the many reasons I’ve been able to progress from undertaking bank analysis or P&L work within client files, to preparing full sets of accounts on my own and engaging in more audit work.
I've been at MACO for just over 5 years, having secured a role here after I finished University.
Since then, I have become ICAS qualified and have been promoted to Accounts & Audit Manager. Now, I'm taking steps to further my progression as the firm continues to grow.
I joined the firm in 2019 after completing two years at university and deciding that it wasn't for me.
MACO stood out to me due to its company values, charity work and progression opportunities.
I'm now working toward my ATT Qualification and have been recently promoted to Tax Assistant.
I joined MACO in April 2021 as a trainee accountant so that I could gain experience in another field of accountancy, in particular working with numbers.
Thus far MACO has been beneficial in not only providing interesting and challenging day-to-day work but also supporting my studies towards my Association of Certified Chartered Accounts (ACCA) qualification.
